Hi, I'm Madelaine.

I'm a contemporary textile artist transforming vintage embroideries, reclaimed jewellery and overlooked materials into richly layered artworks that explore craftsmanship and material value.

After completing a First Class BA (Hons) in Textile Design, specialising in Embroidery, followed by an MA in Fashion Entrepreneurship & Brand Innovation, I realised I wasn't interested in preserving embroidery simply as tradition. Instead, I wanted to explore how it could exist within contemporary art.

My practice begins with objects that already carry a history. A hand-embroidered piece from the 1970s paired with a broken necklace isn't something I see as complete it's the beginning of a new artwork. By collecting and reworking these materials, I create pieces that honour their past while allowing them to become something entirely new.

Rather than starting with a finished drawing, I develop each artwork through making. Stitch by stitch, I respond to the materials in front of me, allowing colour, texture and instinct to shape the final piece. This intuitive process means every work evolves differently, guided as much by the history of its materials as by my own hand.

Through this approach, I hope to encourage people to slow down, look closer and reconsider the value of objects that might otherwise be overlooked. My work celebrates the enduring craftsmanship held within everyday textiles while reimagining embroidery as a contemporary artistic medium.
